Each year during the winter season, humpback whales — called koholā in Hawaiian — travel 3,000 miles from cool waters of Alaska to the warmer ocean waters of Hawaiʻi. In the Kumulipo the palaoa (sperm whale) is the manifestation of Kanaloa, the god of the sea. Palaoa are said to have helped Polynesians discover the Hawaiian Islands.
These special creatures are amazing to see in person and are important to protect. This exclusive Design Jord illustration celebrates these beautiful sea creatures in a fun, new way.
